Nothing like new clothes to make a girl smile...

Mika and I selected some new clothes for them on Wednesday... which they enjoyed wearing out on Saturday to the library. As you can see, Mika likes "busy" patterns... and we weren't really sure if Marika's top was a dress or not. I didn't think so, but when she put it on, well... none of us were sure...

Today was the last day of the fall soccer season and it was very blustery! The girls hid in someone's tent for most of the game, wailing (loudly and annoyingly, I might add) that they were going to be blown away. Luckily, I seemed to be the only one who could hear the whining way across the field...

And also fortunately, my teammates agreed to pose for this team picture. Some of them said, "you're such a woman!" because I wanted this picture (I was not ashamed!) but every single one of them wanted a copy! Ha! It was a fun season and the winter season starts next week. Yay! We finished in third place (boo!) but will shoot for better next season. =)

The Ladybugs Are Here!

Our lovely ladybug larvae arrived yesterday... the girls (especially Marika, of course) were terribly excited!

Thirteen precious little larvae arrived safely, with a little pile of food. They'd been growing steadily already, as evidenced by the cast skins found in the transport container. It's a really cute setup, as far as a ladybug habitat could be - very colorful and very easy to make observations. Every day, the girls will have to pipette some water into the habitat, but other than that, it's just a waiting game to see insects develop.

Speaking of development - after 6 days, our painted lady caterpillars are developing very nicely. At least six (out of seven) are doing great, although some are certainly fatter than others. I hope they go through metamorphosis soon... frankly, I'm a little worried about all that poop (and therefore, mold) that is steadily accumulating... it's hard to see with all the debris plus silks that are being produced...

And in other news... here was Marika's fashion statement yesterday...

As the school year winds down (one more day to go!), things are still busy. I spent the morning making candy lollipops for the teacher and teacher's aid. Unlike other parts of the country, this neighborhood appreciates home-made gifts. It was fun to create these sweets, but a little stressful if they didn't turn out perfectly... (I really liked those ladybug lollipops, though!).

It was too cold for the kids to have a "Water Day", so Plan B was to have several stations in the recess yard for the kids to play. I was in charge of the "Potato Sack station" - purely by choice, because I remember how much fun it was to do as a kid. Marika had a blast - she hopped all over the place and even though she never won a race, she had fun! Mika, on the other hand, fell over during the first race, promptly began to bawl, and quit immediately. *sigh*

One more day of school!

Just one (or two) of those days...

Marika decided to gussy herself up yesterday evening...

And as if that wasn't enough, check out what she did to her leg...

My neighbor came to borrow some cinnamon this morning, while I was unloading groceries between errands - so she watched the girls in the car while I ran into the house. When I returned 20 seconds later, she casually commented, "oh, I see she can spell her name..." I wonder how truly horrified she was... and I really wish Marika would use those washable markers I bought! Can you see that she even "painted" her toenails??? *sigh*

And this is how my morning began. It's the morning routine to wave bye to Daddy as he leaves for work every morning. You can hear the girls all the way down the street! Well, apparently there was some pushing going on while I was outside photographing a crane fly (see below) ... one is mad because she got pushed off the sofa and the other is mad because she knows she did something bad... so you can just imagine them screaming, "Bye, Daddy, bye!" while they're crying at the same time - probably pretty pathetic!

But how cool is this? This crane fly stood still as I snapped picture after picture of it. You can even see the halteres (the second pair of "wings" that help the fly "stabilize" its flight)! Gorgeous, don't you think?

And finally... a story from our recycling man (the girls and I recycled our cans and bottles today). He said his grandmother used to tell him the story of two men who were each granted a wish by a genie. One wished to be the richest man in the world while the other wished to be the smartest. Fast forward one year later - the richest man was now poor and the smartest man was now the richest man in the world! I thought it was a nice story, but the guy reassured me that it sounded much better in Spanish!
